Does Getting a Tattoo Hurt? 3 Tips to Make it Less Painful

Everyone is different so answering the question of whether getting a tattoo will hurt is pretty tricky since it depends on so many different factors. What is your pain tolerance? Where are you getting your tattoo? Is it the first one you’ve ever gotten? All of this can impact how much it hurts, and so there’s no easy answer to say whether it will hurt you or not. That being said, there are several things that you can do to ensure that your tattoo hurts as little as possible.

Choose a Spot that Hurts Less - Some areas of the body are more sensitive than others. Getting a tattoo in a super sensitive area will ensure that the pain you experience is a bit heightened. So if you are still on the fence about where you want to put your tattoo, steer clear of the ribcage, inside of your upper arm or thigh, and your hands and feet and opt for places like your shoulders, hips, back, and upper chest. Stay Hydrated and Get Enough Rest - Take good care of yourself is good advice generally, but even more so when you are getting a tattoo. You will be better able to cope with the pain on a full night of sleep, and making sure that you stay hydrated is always a good idea because getting a tattoo when your skin is really dry is much more painful. Distract Yourself - Another great thing to do while you’re getting the tattoo is to distract yourself either with a conversation with the people around you or by getting into a deeply relaxed and almost meditative state. Focus on something else by listening to an audio book, your favorite tunes, or something you find really interesting. Now if all that doesn’t work, you can opt to get an anesthetic! If you find it hard to tolerate pain, or you are getting it done in a very sensitive spot, this might be a good option. Have any questions about getting a tattoo in San Diego?
